From Idea to Fidget: How We Design and 3D Print Every Toy
Every fidget on our shelves starts out as nothing more than an idea — usually a shape, a character, or a movement we can't stop thinking about. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how that idea becomes the sensory toy you hold in your hands.
Step 1: The idea
Every design starts with a question: what would feel satisfying to hold, and what would actually help someone focus or self-regulate? Sometimes the inspiration is an animal, sometimes it's a shape or a mechanism we want to try. Either way, the goal from day one is the same — form and function have to work together, not just one or the other.
Step 2: 3D modeling
Once we have a concept, it gets built digitally, piece by piece. This is where the articulation comes to life — every joint, every connection point has to be modeled with enough clearance to move freely, but not so much that the piece feels loose or flimsy.
Step 3: Test prints
The first print of any new design is rarely the final one. We print, test the movement in our own hands, and note where it feels stiff, fragile, or just not quite right. Small adjustments — a millimeter more clearance here, a slightly thicker joint there — can make the difference between a fidget that feels amazing and one that just feels okay.
Step 4: Choosing the material
We print almost everything in PLA, a plant-based, biodegradable plastic that's safe, sturdy, and kinder to the planet than traditional petroleum-based plastics. It's a deliberate choice, not a default — we care about what these toys are made of, especially since so many of them end up in kids' hands.
Step 5: Printing in Quebec
Every finished piece is printed layer by layer, right here in our own workshop in Quebec — not outsourced overseas. That means we control quality at every step, and it means when you order from us, your fidget is made close to home.
Step 6: Quality check and packaging
Before anything ships, each piece gets a final check — testing the movement, checking the finish, making sure every joint folds the way it should. Then it's carefully packaged and sent on its way to you.
Why it matters
A lot of what makes a fidget genuinely satisfying to use — smooth articulation, the right amount of resistance, a finish that feels good in your hands — comes down to details that are easy to overlook, but that we spend a lot of time getting right. That's the part of the process you don't see, but we hope you can feel it.
